Eleanor Plunkett

Well, I like this tune. It made tune of the month after we all saw a lovely take on it by Roland Carson, so I’ve learned it up, and here we are. It seems to sit on this box, a Castagnari Giasco I in D/G just beautifully – like it was made for this tune. It’s an O’Carolan air of course.

Pterodactyl 2 Step / Drowsy Dragon

2 fantastic tunes written by Huw Williams (no relation!) and played as a showstopping set in the middle of Huw and Tony Williams’ gigs. Huw would lament how he’d right all these fantastic songs – he’s an outstanding songwriter, singer and guitarist – then people would come up and go ‘play the melodeon one mate’ … and this is it. Freakishly inventive and really quite tricky… talented, talented chap is old Huw. Played on a Hohner pokerwork in D/G, which you pretty much have to, because of how the accidentals work.

Melodeon.net’s theme of the month for June 2017 is ‘animals’. Didn’t say it had to be either non-extinct or non-fictional animals!

Tes Jolies Patin Blancs

A lovely waltz written by Philippe Prieur; part of melodeon.net’s theme of the month for May 2017, Colours – white stretching the point a bit I suppose. Played in G on a Kay Albrecht’ converted G/C Lilliput.

Morpeth Rant

A rather lovely traditional tune from northern England, and a true session classic. Here played in Bb, and then Eb, on a Bb/Eb Hohner Preciosa.

Lunch in the Pub

If ever there was a Milton Keynes folk tune, this is it. Written by Pete Lockwood of the Cock and Bull band, and here played in G on a G/C Hohner Lilliput conversion by Kay Albrecht. If you meet this in a session, which you surely will around Milton Keynes, you’ll find it in D where it fits on a D/G melodeon nicely.

Florinda / Organdi

2 french marches written by Gilles Chabenat, and popularised in the UK at least by Chris Wood and Andy Cutting in the … 1990’s. My word, is it really that long ago? They both fit beautifully on a melodeon. Played on a Hohner Bb/Eb Preciosa, and mostly in Eb. Part of melodeon.net’s theme of the month for March 2017, er, Marches.
