Black Nag / Nonesuch

2 tunes played as part of Melodeon.net’s theme of the month ‘Tunes collected by Cecil Sharp’. Not so much collected by Cecil Sharp these – they’re both well known Playford tunes – but part of his Country Dance volume, section 4, so fair game I think.

Played on a Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb (so these tunes are in C minor)

The Abbess,

A wonderful tune, written by Andy Cutting and played as part of Melodeon.net’s Tune of the Month for January 2014. Played on a Castagnari Lilly in A/D (so here, the tune’s played in D).

Christmas Day Ida Moarning on Electronic Melodeon

Here’s my contribution to Melodeon.net’s Christmas Tunes theme of the month; this gorgeous ‘listening tune’ from Shetland, written by Shetland fiddler Fredamann Stickle who used to play this tune to the laird every Christmas apparently.

Played in D on a Streb electronic melodeon using a sample set taken from a dry tuned Castagnari melodeon, although with these settings it sounds rather more expressive and almost like a harmonica I would say.

Halsway by Nigel Eaton, on the My Melodeon iPad App

Introducing the My Melodeon melodeon simulator app for the iPad and iPhone, here being used to play Nigel Eaton’s great tune Halsway. Here we’re simulating my 2.5 row D/G Mory! Other simulators are available for irish (semitone tuned) accordions, B/C/C#, B system and C system chromatics.

Part of Melodeon.net’s Tune of the Month for December 2013…

The Blossom and the Rain, composed by Brian Peters,

Melodeon.net’s tune of the month for November 2013, and not one I’ve played before. Heard lots of times yes, but not played. So here we are, practiced up for a couple of days, and it’s really rather lovely, isn’t it? Written by (and played with kind permission of) Brian Peters, a fine singer/guitarist/concertina/melodeon player from Derbyshire, UK.

The Dark Hill, Composed by John Close

A gorgeous slow air/waltz composed by the late John Close of Milton Keynes. John wrote many great songs, some funny, some not, and occasionally the odd tune like this. Played by Clive Williams on a Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb; part of Melodeon.net’s Theme of the Month for November 2013, Local Tunes (I live in Milton Keynes and knew John well).

Kristjani Reilender

Here we are folks, my effort at learning and playing this little tune from Estonia, part of Melodeon.net’s tune of the month for October 2013. Played on a Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb (normally the tune’s in D, here’s its played in Bb). Traditional, as far as I know.

Sous le Ciel De Paris

Jean Drejac’s 1950’s parisian waltz, immortalised (in the melodeon world anyway) by Tony Hall as ‘Banks of the Seine’. Played on a G/C 1920’s Hohner; part of melodeon.net tune of the month for September 2013.
