A demonstration of the 12 bass preciosa – a customised Hohner Preciosa melodeon in Bb/Eb, played by Clive Williams. The tunes are ‘The Wrong Turn’ by Anne Marie Summers, and ‘Sportsman’s Hornpipe’, a traditional tune.

My version of this 3/2 hornpipe from the north east of England (which is where I was born incidentally). No video of me this time; instead we have some lovely photos by Gail Johnson of St Mary’s Lighthouse, Whitley Bay (find her on Flickr – sorry Gail, I would give a proper link to your pictures, but youtube tends to reject anything with a web address in it).
Played on a D/G Castagnari Mory with lots of reverb.

Orange in Bloom is normally played as a waltz in sessions, or as a jig when played for Morris. It also makes a jolly good hornpipe though!
For those of you who haven’t met a Giasco 1 before, it’s effectively a 12 bass Castagnari Lilly, a single voice box with reeds mounted flat to give a concertina type sound. My one has unisonoric basses giving D, G, C, Am, Em, Bm all in both directions.
Comments closedA quick test by me to check how to upload youtube clips. The tune is the Liverpool Hornpipe. More tunes to follow as part of the ‘tune of the month’ project on www.melodeon.net
