Wassailing / I Saw Three Ships

2 Christmas tunes played as part of melodeon.net’s theme for December 2017, which is of course a Christmas themes again. These are played on a Van der Aa Compact III in G/C, in C.

Midnight on the Water (Electronic Version)

I’ve already recorded this tune earlier on the channel, so here’s a different approach. This time we’re playing on a Streb electronic melodeon, doing multi-tracked violin/strings through a Midi interface onto an iPad running ThumbJam.

Elizabeth Clare (Second Version)

A second version of this, this time played in D (twice) and then G, on a D/G Castagnari Giasco I. I love this melodeon; it’s great at stuff like this. Elizabeth Clare was written by Chris Wood, and is melodeon.net’s tune of the month for November 2017.

Elizabeth Clare

A first attempt on this Chris Wood tune – I tried a couple of different versions of this – so thought I’d upload them both! This one is on a Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb, played in Eb.

Melodeon.net tune of the month for November 2017.

Crackling

A one-row tune written for Melodeon.net’s theme of the month for November 2017, One-Row tunes. I wrote this a few hours ago, while experimenting for a few ideas for what I should play; it’s harder than it looks, and needs 4 fingers on the treble to play fluently. Good exercise for us box players.

Planxty Madame Maxwell

An O’Carolan march, played for melodeon.net’s tune of the month for October 2017. Played on a D/G Castagnari Giasco I.

Planxty Davis

A version of this tune composed by Thomas Connellan, an Irish harpist. This is a march time version, influenced by Nic Jones’ guitar version, rather than the hornpipe version common in irish set dancing circles.

Blue Sausage Island

Here’s a go at Blue Sausage Island, Cliff Stapleton’s amazing schottische, Cliff being a cracking gurdy player and composer of course. Genuinely difficult on melodeon, so apologies for any simplifications that may be flying through. We’re in D minor on a C/F Hohner Club 1 here.

Melodeon.net theme of the month Sep 2017 is Schottisches; this is part of that.

Valse Gitanes

This is a La Chavannee tune, I’m fairly certain – written by Eric Montbel. Having such a generic name, there’s *LOTS* of different tunes called this, but I think this is. a lovely waltz that fits beautifully on a 2 row 8 bass box, and here played on a C/F Hohner Club I.

La Petit Bal Marine

Fran├žois Deguelt’s musette waltz, learned from the playing of great french musician, Marc Perrone. This version is in Am and G (on a G/C Hohner Lilliput conversion by Kay Albrecht); pretty much the only way you can sensibly fit it on a 2 row 8 bass instrument. The original was in Am and A I think. This is a quick, early attempt at this at resurrecting this (first attempted 25 years ago) – the version by, for example, 21 Boutons shows I’ve some way to go…
