West End Mazurka

This fantastic mazurka was written by my good friend Chris Shaw; normally it’s played by GIG CB in a mostly fiddle led sound in D minor, but here I’m trying it on a G/C Hohner Lilliput, and it’s in A minor. Melodeon.net’s theme of the month; playing tunes by other melnet members.

Hesleyside Reel

October’s tune of the month at Melodeon.net is this wonderful English tune. Played on a G/C Hohner Lilliput converted by Kay Albrecht.

Trip to Milton Keynes

I wrote this little tune yesterday. I’ve been racking my brains for a tune to play for Melodeon.net’s theme of the month for October 2018, which is transport and travel… and I can’t think of any I haven’t played yet – so I wrote one. I’m fairly confident no-one else have ever named a tune ‘Trip to Milton Keynes’ yet, and so I did. Played in C on a Hohner Lilliput in G/C.

Valse efter Tor Lohne

This beautiful, beautiful tune was played by Chris Wood and Andy Cutting in the 1990’s – It’s one of my version piano pieces, but I’ve tried without success to get a decent melodeon version of it for years. This month’s melodeon.net theme following the ‘tunes with names in them’ theme; thought I’d try again as a bit of a challenge. It’s not that hard to play, but it’s hard to get the musicality in it.

Here I’m playing on a G/C Van der Aa Compact III in A minor.

Salmon Tails up the Water

This wonderful tune is one of the first tunes I ever learned. Very well known, but not often played (at least in sessions I go to), because it’s very well known. It’s great. Part of melodeon.net’s theme of the month for August 2018.

Traditional tune from North East England. Played on a Kay Albrecht Lilliput in G/C (so we’re in C) – it’s more commonly played (on melodeon anyway) in G.

Arthur by Eric Theze

This is a version of Eric Theze’s wonderful mazurka/slow waltz “Arthur” learned mostly from Massimo Craveri’s lovely version. Eric is a truly incredible musician and composer on bandoneon, piano, and many other instruments too. Played as part of melodeon.net’s theme of the month for July 2018.

Here played on a Van der Aa Compact III melodeon in G/C.

I’ve uploaded a piano version too here https://youtu.be/QqwF637s7qo

Grenville Morris

This tune by Sam Sweeney is Melodeon.net’s tune of the month for July 2018. It can be found on Leveret’s album Inventions which rather thoughtfully includes the music of the tunes in the CD case!

Played here on a G/C Van der Aa Compact III melodeon.

The Tip-Top Polka

Straight down the line version of this really enjoyable polka as used by the Bacup Coconut Dancers. Melodeon.net tune of the month for May 2018.

The Ookpik Waltz

I’ve taken this version of Frankie Rodgers’ fiddle tune from Forrest Crain’s melodeon version, which I really rather like. The tune has shifted quite a lot from Frankie’s original I notice, and there seems to be a lot of variation in the various fiddle versions out there, let alone the ones that sit on different instruments.

Played as part of melodeon.net’s theme of the month for May 2018, tunes from America – I guess this is part Canadian, and part USA.

Camdence

A mazurka written by Gregory Jolivet of Blowzabella, and learned from their latest album “Two Score”. Fits on melodeon really quite nicely, needing a small accidental note at the end of the B music, but that’s about it.

Melodeon.net’s theme of the month is mazurkas; this video is part of that. Played on a restored 1920’s Hohner in G/C
