Month: March 2023

Ceci N’est Pas Une Valse

A great tune written by Pascale Rubens of Naragonia, which is in 3 time, but used to teach how many different styles of 3 time tune are possible in addition to the waltz. This version isn’t a waltz, isn’t quite a bourree, and is more of a slow march.

Melodeon.net’s tune of the month for March 2023, played on a Van der Aa Compact III in G/C.

Terminus

A pretty great tune written by Rob Harbron, normally played as part of a set with another of his tunes, Rain on the Woodpile (recorded elsewhere on this channel). Always wanted to learn it, fits in with melodeon.net theme of the month for March 2023, tunes starting with the letter T.

Played on a Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb.

Tich’s Reel

An ‘experimental’ version of this tune, played in the style of Cormac Begley’s inspirational bass concertina album, B. Play in the lower register, single reed, and rather than trying to avoid buttons and bellows noise, make use of its percussive qualities. Cormac’s rather better at this than I am, so buy his album.

The tune is Tich’s Reel, trad English, which I learned off an old 1980’s LP Red Shift, I think. Played on a Hohner 114 4-stop melodeon in G.

Snöflinga

A lovely waltz from the playing of, and presumably writing of, Le Sextet a Claques and on their live album. This is nice to play, but honestly, listen to the original when the trumpet kicks in.

Played for melodeon.net’s theme of the month, February 2023, on a Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb, in the key of C minor. Needs a tricky accidental on the push in the B music.

So Fröhlich

Pascale Ruben’s gorgeous mazurka, So Fröhlich. Quite challenging to figure out to play, as a hint for myself in the future when I’ve forgotten, the frst few chords are largely (in D/G terms) Bm to Em to Am, and most of the action happens in the inner row.

One of a trio of tunes I’ve put together for Melodeon.net’s theme of the month for February 2023.

Played on a Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb, which puts it a semitone above the Naragonia version. To use the same fingering I used, you’d need an A/D to play it in the same key as on the record.

Snow on the Tracks

Lovely slow march written by Rachel Darling; I learned it from the playing of Leveret. Played in D on a D/G Castagnari Giasco I.

2nd of a trio of tunes following February 2023’s theme of the month at melodeon.net

Ricer

A schottische written by Andy Cutting, melodeon.net’s tune of the month for February 2023. Nice and straightforward… unless I’m playing it wrong, of course. Played in Bb on a Bb/Eb Hohner Preciosa.
