The Windmill played by Mark Prescott and Clive Williams

Mark and I used to play this tune many years ago; it’s dropped out of our repertoire more recently, though in hindsight perhaps it shouldn’t have. I recorded the original track last week; Mark sent me his track shortly after, and with a bit of mixing, here we are!

The tune is by Ben Dauncey, a phenomenal melodeon player from south England.

Tarantella

A fairly common tarantella; don’t know if it has a more descriptive name – sorry! It has an usual bit in the a music where it steps back a beat for a large part of it, making up for it at the end of the a music where it skips a beat. So, 32 bars. I’m not entirely sure this is how it should be played, and sometimes I play it straight without the backstep and skip, especially in sessions and for barndances. Not here though! Played on a Hohner pokerwork in D/G.

The Windmill

This cracking waltz was (I think) written by English box player Ben Dauncey. Other than a video of Ben playing it, long since taken down, I don’t think I’ve heard any other versions of it. It’s a great tune. Played in Am on a G/C Van der Aa box. It was originally written in Am, and Ben used to play it on a 3 row D/G box with an unusual third row, half in A, half in C#.

Farley Bridge

A rather nice tune by Duncan Chisholm that I’ve just learned up. It turns out it plays rather more easily in the upper octave. Played on a Castagnari Mory in D/G.

Barroom Branle

A tune written by Rob Kay in the 1980s, who used to play keyboards with dance band Tickled Pink. A fairly unusual structure, the A music is in D, the B music in C. Played for the ‘New Tunes’ theme on melodeon.net, January 2021.

Played on a Hohner Pokerwork in D/G. You need a F natural accidental to play this tune.

Glory of the Sun

Another take on this tune for Melodeon.net’s tune of the month for January 2021. This is a trad english tune from the playford collection, here played on a D/G Castagnari Giasco. A little more sedate that my earlier version of this recorded a few years ago.
