Month: November 2020

A Surfeit of Lampreys

Just learned this for the Vaults Bar lockdown session; trying to expand my repertoire a little. This fantastic tune was written by Maartin Allcock, and was played when he was in Fairport Convention. There’s a great version of him playing it in 2017 at Cropredy, shortly before he passed away – here, on Fairport’s channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLjvfIMYeNM

Played on a D/G Castagnari Mory

Lake Arthur

Another recording for the Vaults Bar lockdown virtual session; this is a tune I used to play quite a few years ago in a local barndance band. It’s traditional, but learned from the Chipolata 5 album, Skinless, which I think was released about 1999.

Played on a Castagnari Mory in D/G.

Melodeon.net’s theme of the month for November 2020 is tunes you wouldn’t expect on the melodeon; this is a cover of a great piece of electronic music by the Yellow Magic Orchestra, written by Yukihiro Takahashi. I learned it a long time ago because it’s the soundtrack to the arcade game Super Locomotive which I played a lot in my youth (a long time ago). You can see a video of the arcade game, and its frankly fantastic soundtrack here https://youtu.be/lfX9tnHXX7s?t=81

I’ve had to rework it slightly to play on the 2 row 8 bass melodeon, especially the 3rd part, which I’ve simplified the last bar of. I’ve also dropped the 4th part which as far as I can tell is simply lots of electronic zapping sounds!

Played on a Hohner Club I in C/F, which puts in the original key (I think!) of D minor.

La Seduisante played by Vivant

This 5 time waltz is another Stephane Delicq tune, which Mark and I are working up at the minute. With the lockdown restarting things are on pause for a bit, but we recorded this a week ago for the Vaults Bar lockdown session a few days before lockdown started again.

I’m playing the Van der Aa Compact III in G/C.

Ciel ‘d Automne

Here is Andre Brunet’s lovely tribute to his father, which is Melodeon.net’s tune of the month for November 2020. I’m playing this in D on a D/G Castagnari Giasco.

Newly-weds Reel / Voyager’s Reel

A quick rip through these 2 tunes that I’ve known for years but never played out. Recorded for The Vaults Bar’s virtual session which looks like it’s going to be running for a while yet.

Quebecois reels popularised (in the UK anyway) by Chris Wood and Andy Cutting’s debut tape in 1990 or so.

Played on a Hohner 114 in G; it’s a bit clacky, but really very playable.
